for advanced nursing (or allied health) practice.
However, the Advanced Paediatric and Neonatal
Programmes utilise the proposed competency
requirements drafted by the Nursing and Midwifery
Council with regard to advanced nursing practice
(currently the only advanced practice competencies
agreed by a regulatory body in the UK).
In addition, important policy documents from the Royal
College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH), the
Department of Health (DH), and the NHS have guided
the direction of the programmes. In the current
absence of regulation of the Advanced Nurse
Practitioner and Advanced Practitioner roles, guidance
from these organisations is fundamental to assure both
quality and governance issues are addressed.

1. Have highly specialised and highly developed knowledge and skills (beyond those required for professional
registration) that encompass the breadth and depth of current and future professional practice.
2. Accept the full responsibility for providing those services, hitherto undertaken by others, in defined
circumstances.
