The Architecture degree is your first step towards a professional career in Architecture (RIBA Part I). We offer a broad-based design degree that typically leads graduates on to RIBA Part II and III within the department. Our commitment is to provide you with a dynamic, challenging and supportive environment in which to develop your architectural ability. You will work on a wide range of design projects. You are encouraged to investigate and develop your ideas through drawing, photography, film, video, CAD and computer-based explorations; model-making and workshop-based fabrications; and installations. You will explore the history, theory and technological ideas of architecture and have extensive contact with practicing architects.

Career opportunities
Most graduates go on to take RIBA Part II (Professional Diploma in Architecture) and gain a professional qualification. The course also introduces you to wider cultural and social issues that equip you with research, design and presentation skills, which are valued in many design-related professions. Recent graduates have found work with companies such as ORMS, Tony Fretton Architects, Macreanor Lavington, Carusi St John, EPR and Sou Fujimoto Architects, Tokyo.

The extended degree involves four years study in Architecture, Interior Architecture and Design or Architectural Studies. The Foundation year (known as Level 0) is an intensive one-year preparatory introduction to a broad range of design skills and techniques and outlines ways of thinking about design and the ideas that inform Architecture and Interior Design.
The year helps you develop a portfolio of work suitable for direct progression into the Certificate Level of our degree courses or your application to study related subjects.

Architectural Studies is aimed at students who are interested in architecture, urbanism and spatial design but who do not intend to become practicing architects, spatial artists or interior designers. It combines an introduction to architectural design education with the exploration of related subjects both academically and creatively. This includes a range of optional modules that allow you to build your own course, culminating in a design and environment-related project. Currently the department supports four key areas: Architectural and urban history, theory and culture; contemporary architectural technologies; spatial arts and urban regeneration; architectural and design practice.

We aim to provide you with a sound academic base in accounting and finance and an opportunity to achieve exemptions from the examinations of professional accounting bodies. You can also choose one of the optional specialist pathways: Accounting Systems, Forensic Accounting or Taxation. The department has links with many accountancy-related organisations to help you to find relevant placements and work experience, and also offers specialist careers advice.
