Chemical industry is one the fastest growing industries in the Palestinian territories. It includes industries like pharmaceutical, food, detergents, plastic, paints, ceramics, tanning, and fine chemicals, just to name few examples. To serve the needs of this industry, the Chemical Engineering Department at An-Najah National University was established in 1995 and is the only department, among all Palestinian universities, that offers the BS degree in chemical engineering. Graduates from this department work in a wide variety of Palestinian, Arab, and even international chemical industries. The quality of education of this department has been known to be of high standards, as evident by testimonies of chemical industry owners who hired its graduates and international graduate schools at which some of its former students decided to pursue graduate degrees.

The Department was founded together with the establishment of An-Najah N. University in 1977. Four programs are being offered in chemistry, one leading to the B.Sc. degree in pure chemistry & the other leading to the B.Sc. degree in applied chemistry and two other postgraduate programs , one leading to the M.Sc. degree and the other leading to the Ph.D.degree. The aim of the Department is to provide the community with high standard chemists, able to help in building up their society.
Requirements for admission Successful completion of Arabic 31111 and 31112: Introduction to Literary Appreciation and Arabic Library A minimum of 70% in each of the two courses. Prospective majors should sit for a proficiency examination which counts for 30%. In case of a large number of applicants, acceptance will be arranged in descending order according to their total major averages.
