The term landscape architecture first came into common use in the mid-1800s when Frederick Law Olmsted designed New York’s Central Park. Today, the profession of Landscape Architecture centers on the design, planning, and management of the exterior environment. The practice of landscape architecture, with its applications to urban, suburban, and rural environments, is very broad. This profession encompasses the analysis of sites to determine their most appropriate future uses and management practices such as development, preservation, and restoration; the arrangement of built components such as buildings, transportation systems, and pedestrian systems; and the usage of site features such as plazas, gardens, and parks. The average landscape architect impacts over 1.6 million acres and nearly 2 million people per year. A landscape architecture firm can expect to oversee up to $12 million in design and construction expenditures annually. Landscape architects practice in many types of privately owned firms and in a variety of governmental agencies.
The Master of Landscape Architecture program at Kansas State University is committed to providing students with exposure to a broad range of activities designed to develop mastery of the knowledge and skills necessary for careers in landscape architecture. Woven into the fabric of the course of study are ecology, construction, computer applications, parks and recreation planning and design, community site planning, and regional resource analysis and planning.
During the second semester of the fourth year of study, students have the opportunity to participate in a 30-week internship experience. This internship, under the supervision of a landscape architect, acquaints students with some of the expectations and working environments of the profession and provides them the occasion to test their early notions about career choices in a variety of settings. Another option available to fourth-year students is the opportunity to participate for a semester long study abroad program in Castiglion Fiorentino or Orvieto, Italy.
Graduates of the Master of Landscape Architecture program are prepared to lead and creatively engage in the development and completion of projects that focus on a variety of issues ranging from the management of the natural habitat to the design of places for human use and enjoyment. Graduates are also prepared to use their knowledge, insight, skill, and technological expertise to apply a design process that enables them to move from the analytical phases of a project through design to the implementation and construction of landscapes. Alumni are employed across the United States and abroad, in private firms, both large and small, as well as in public agencies such as the National Park Service, Forest Service, and state and municipal offices.

The Master of Landscape Architecture is accredited by the Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board (LAAB) of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA).

Students wishing to pursue an education in architecture, interior architecture, or landscape architecture in Kansas City can begin their studies at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. A cooperative agreement between KSU and UMKC enables students to enroll in a comprehensive two-year curriculum (one year for landscape architecture) that introduces them to the fundamentals of environmental design. Participation in study abroad programs benefits students in any major; however, students enrolled in architecture, interior architecture and product design, and landscape architecture are particularly well served through the experience of studying in unfamiliar environments—it heightens cultural awareness, improves self-reliance and broadens professional horizons. We offer a variety of specific international study programs for our students and encourage students to give serious consideration to this option for the second semester of the fourth year.
Landscape planning and design have been part of the curriculum at Kansas State University since 1871, being part of the required curriculum of all students in the early days of the institution. The first MLA student graduated in 1968 and the MLA program is fully accredited by the Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board of the American Society of Landscape Architects.

The purpose of the Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) program at Kansas State University is to prepare students for entry into the practice of the profession. The curriculum meets the needs of students with landscape architecture degrees (BLA) seeking professional advancement and non-landscape architecture (non-BLA) backgrounds as a first professional degree.
The coursework consists of two components: the proficiency series taken by students with a non-BLA background, and the advanced graduate courses taken by all students. The MLA varies in length from two years for students entering with a BLA to seven-semesters, taken in a three-year sequence, for non-BLA students.

It’s the same
The number of students who can be admitted the College of Architecture, Planning and Design (CAPD) is limited, and admission is competitive. CAPD admits students for the fall semester only. A complete application must be postmarked by February 1.
Architecture, Interior Architecture and Product Design, Landscape Architecture
To ensure consideration, all application materials must be sent to the Office of Admissions, 119 Anderson Hall, Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS 66506 and postmarked before February 1. The College of Architecture, Planning, and Design begins review of complete applications on February 1. Meeting this deadline does not guarantee admission to the college. Students
The intent of the Department of Interior Architecture and Product Design is to provide students with the most diverse design education possible. A strong emphasis is placed on the design and understanding of the psychological connection of products and spaces with their users. The design of interiors, furniture, and products is viewed as an extension of the architecture that contains them.
