Teaching, learning and assessment methods used to enable outcomes to be achieved and
demonstrated
A combination of methods is used but primarily these are based on regular attendance by participants. MBA
classes at JMU are traditionally in the size range 15-24 and comprise 3 hour blocks. This allows opportunities for
discussion and allows tutors the time to use a range of methods such as case studies and discussion exercises
to supplement lecture input. The increasing use of Blackboard provides an opportunity to make support
materials available 24/7 and longer term developments will provide further support. In some modules,
experiments with mixed size classes have begun. The final dissertation is an individual piece of work supported
by a designated tutor.
Assessment
The predominant assessment methodology is a piece of individual coursework requiring participants to relate
their learning to an organisation with which they are familiar. In most modules there are two pieces of
assessment both of which contribute to the final grade but which allows for formation feedback to be given
during the module. Where appropriate time constrained tests are used and this provides a range of assessment
types. Where students experience problems in relating learning to an organisation then the course team will
allow the use of an appropriate case study as an alternative.
