Biomedical Scientists identify disease and its causes, investigate and monitor pathological processes and treatment strategies and also engage in medical research. The core modules of this course examine the structure, functioning and analysis of bio-molecules, cells, tissues and body systems, together with training in non-technical skills. This unique international degree is accredited by the IBMS (Institute of Biomedical Science) and is offered in conjunction with the University of Health Sciences Antigua (UHSA). Graduates will undertake licensing examinations to enable them to practice medicine in the USA and UHSA graduates have a success rate of over 90%. Additional accreditation exams will be required for other countries.

UHSA MD programme - Clinical Curriculum
On successful completion of the BSc Biomedical Science degree (you must obtain a minimum 2:1 grade), the UHSA on-line modules and the UHSA Summer Schools, students then undertake two years of clinical rotations in hospitals. This clinical rotation can be taken in hospitals in the USA, Canada, UK or Puerto Rica. UHSA has well-established links with excellent teaching hospitals in these countries and has supported over 3,700 graduates to achieve their MD status who are currently working in hospitals.
In the first clinical year students will undertake 48 weeks of core clinical rotations in the areas of:
Internal medicine
General surgery
Obsteretics and Gynaecology/Paediatrics
Psychiatry
Family Medicine
This will form the foundation of the student’s clinical educational framework, after which students are then required to select sub-specialties and rotate for a further 30 weeks in these sub-specialties of core rotations. Students can select their clinical electives from a wide choice offered below. Advice about rotations will be given by the Dr Cherry Galaport who supervises all clinical rotations.
Anaesthesiology
ENT
Orthopaedics
Cardiology
Gastroenterology
Pathology
Clinical Care
Infectious Diseases
Neurology
Epidemiology
Emergency Medicine
Ophthalmology
Career opportunities
Graduates have taken up careers in pathology services, in research institutes, in public health, in forensic science and in commerce, including the pharmaceutical industry and the financial sector. Many have also opted for further training or research in teaching, medicine and other professions. Graduates have found work for companies such as Boots, the NHS and various hospitals as Health Care Assistants and Biomedical Scientists.
By fulfilling the BSc Biomedical Science degree with London Metropolitan University and the MD degree at UHSA you will be able to practice as a medical doctor, which includes diagnoses, evaluation, treatment and research into the causes and cures of diseases.
Professional accreditation/exemption
Graduates may take up a Biomedical Scientist trainee post leading to Biomedical Scientist Registration with the Health Professions Council (HPC), as well as a Student Membership of the IBMS and the Institute of Biology (IOB), an Associate Membership of the IBMS and a Graduate or Associate Membership of the IOB. MD graduates, on passing the USMLE will be licensed to practice medicine in the USA. Graduates who wish to undertake accreditation exams for other countries such as the UK and Canada should contact UHSA directly for further information regarding these accreditation examinations.
