An optional work placement is also available. Full-time students intersperse academic study with co-ordinated periods of hospital training.

The Faculty of Humanities, Arts, Languages and Education offers this course, which aims to develop an informed and critical perspective on the development of the modern United States, at home and in the world, through the disciplines of literature, film, history and popular culture. This exciting new programme is one of the few available in the country. It is designed to enable those already working in the field to build on their work experience to gain a professional qualification, or those who are interested in gaining work experience and an appropriate qualification. It has been designed to meet the National Occupational Standards (NOS) and will meet the training needs of NGOs and other providers of advice to the public who are unable to provide such training in-house. It will enable students to gain a higher education qualification by getting credit for their work-based learning, as well as developing their knowledge of key areas of advice and paralegal work.

The course has been developed with input from providers of advice and guidance to reflect what those providers are looking for in their employees. There will be opportunities to develop knowledge in different fields of advice work or specialise in areas in which the students already have work experience. In doing so students will acquire Higher Education qualifications and the opportunity to progress to an Honours Degree programme. Careers are likely to be in the growing NGO sector, Advice Centres or Bureau, in the public sector in local or central government, or the witness support programme.
London is one of the world’s most important centres for advertising, communications and PR so this course offers a fantastic opportunity to get into this industry by studying the subject in the centre of London.
